Welsh Mythology
Project type
Digital
Date
2021
These pieces were inspired by the Welsh myths of The Mabinogion. A key creature from the Mabinogion are the Cŵn Annwn (dogs of the fairy otherworld), white dogs with red ears and eyes. The Mabinogion was originally an oral storytelling tradition and in describing the distinctive features of the Cŵn Annwn the listener was made aware that the fairy folk were involved in the story that was being told. There are many stories in the Mabinogion where the rulers of the Annwn were often described as using them as hunting dogs, that's why I depicted them along side a great figure of the Welsh fairy lore: Gwyn Ap Nudd.
The tickets were inspired by a story of a man able to see the fairy isles when he stood on the cliffs. When he tried to sail there he could no longer see the isles but upon taking the turf from the cliffs he could stand upon it in his boat and find his way there.
